Here are several things I learned about women from women:
- Women are not innocent. Thinking that women are innocent, gentle, more emotional, enlightened, etc. is in fact engaging in sexist thinking and a form of distorted thinking because women do not possess these traits in reality. At the same time, thinking that men are cruel, unemotional, more logical, is also engaging in sexist thinking. Individuals may possess certain traits, but not people of an entire gender.
- Patriarchy is real and women support patriarchy. Patriarchy is men's domination over women in all dimensions. It has been a historical and present reality. Women die under patriarchy 24/7. And most women throughout history also support and maintain patriarchy. This is because women actively benefit from patriarchy. At the very basic level, patriarchy offers women protection. Women are also not shy when it comes to dominating other women. Similarly, just because men's domination over women exists, it does not mean that all men are equal beneficiary from patriarchy. These are not contradictory thoughts. Patriarchy is not an exclusive club for men.
- Masculism is a form of patriarchy and women support masculism. Masculinism is a special form of patriarchy where men seen as possessing masculine traits should dominate over people who do not possess them. Women support masculism despite that it dominates themselves. These are not contradictory thoughts. A good article that define this concept is Laura Butera's thesis "Height, Power, and Gender: Politicizing the Measured Body."
- Heightism is a byproduct of masculism. Shortness is seen as a non-masculine/feminine feature. Because women on the whole supports masculism, therefore they also discriminate against feminine features such as height in both men and women. Interalized oppression is real.
- Women benefit from intersectional oppression. A woman is not only defined by her gender, but also by other factors such as economic status, class, and race. If a woman occupies any privilege position (wealthy, high class, white), then she is fully capable of oppressing against men who do not occupy those privileged positions, despite the existence of patriarchy.
- The term incel disguises oppression by women. Imagine this is the 1800s and African slaves were referred to as "incel" by their slave-owning mistresses for being "uppity" about their situation. Women are just capable in engaging in oppression against men both on the group as well as individual basis. The existence of patriarchy does not deny this possibly, because women also engage in patriarchy and perform oppression through patriarchy. A woman is almost always uplifted by other types of inequalities. In some ways, incel is a form of "othering" and scape-goat towards one's own acts of oppression.
Thots?
