Why do girls leave me on read after they sent me a friend request?

THEY send ME a friend request. Not the other way around. Then I accept the friend request and just say "Hi, what's up. What are you doing".

Then they leave me on read and never respond.

I just asked a girl who does this to me currently what the heck is going on, as I'm getting increasingly frustrated by this.

If you think I'm ugly and you aren't interested in me, fine. I'm not owed anything and it's perfectly fine to not talk to me.

But if you think I'm ugly then why send me a friend request? If you're not interested why send a friend request?
