An 18-year-old man, Timothy G., was charged on Tuesday, July 1st, with conspiracy to commit terrorist acts with a view to preparing one or more crimes against persons and imprisoned. Unknown to the police, he was in possession of two knives when he was arrested last Friday by the DGSI (Directorate General of the Interior) near the high school where he attended preparatory classes in the Saint-Étienne region. "I found a young man in distress, who, in my opinion, has difficulty communicating with young people his own age, who is not comfortable in his own skin. I have the impression that being on social media necessarily contributed to his indictment," explains Maria Snitsar, Timothy G's lawyer. "The next step is the investigation, which will allow us to determine the circumstances and refine the facts, in particular to understand my client's personality. We will be able to have calm discussions on the charges once the investigation is more thorough."Very little information has been released since Timothy G's first appearance before the judge of liberties and detention. However, the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (Pnat) confirmed to France 24 that a judicial investigation has been opened into this young man "claiming to be part of the 'incel' movement" (a contraction of the words "involuntary celibate" in English). Incels harbor hatred toward women because they reject them. According to a source close to the investigation, this is the first referral to the National Anti-Incel Commission (PNAT) concerning an individual who exclusively identifies with this movement.
