It's because of nuclear levels of female hyergamy. Objectivity speaking though, males are the more beautiful sex. If you look at nature, most of the time it's the males of the species who are the more physically impressive. If an impartial alien race were to observe us, they would probably conclude that men are better looking than women.
I think it's living in a supremely safe, soft, and abundant environment that drives females to prefer "pretty boys" more so than the pill. I would estimate that a full one-third of zoomed women are either lesbian or bi.
