I say this from a completely neutral point of view - i.e. I’m not judging the girl. I doubt she’s reading this or even knows our forum exists, but if she is, this is for you:
As an autistic person, I was bullied relentlessly in school. Starting around 7th grade (12 years old) when I started going through puberty, I naturally became romantically interested in girls. Over the course of 7th and 8th grade I approached a few girls, hoping to at least get closer. I recall one was nice to me - nothing came of it, but she was nice - the rest were very passive aggressive or straight up mean to me. I also have Tourette syndrome and am not the best looking so I was known as the weird kid for that as well, which may be why people were so mean to me. I was always polite and respectful. I don’t mind rejection, that’s natural, I only wished they were nice about it and didn’t insult me.
In high school, the bullying continued. It was my just girls I was interested in, many of the girls, mainly the “popular” girls (and some of the boys too) would regularly pick on me, to the point where I was terrified to even talk to classmates about anything.
I’m now 21 and in college. There is a fair share of jerks, which is expected of any college, but there are some people who are very sweet. However my school experience completely fucked me up and I’m still terrified to even ask out a woman, even one who is nice to me, because I worry that word will get around (“He thought he could date her! What a loser!”) and it would be high school all over again.
I imagine it may be the same for many other men, with disabilities and/or not conventionally unattractive faces. Especially those with autism, who have a hard time socializing. We may want to approach you or other women, but we’re afraid of what may happen.
