The accusations weigh heavily, but the young age of the accused seems even more frightening: The Federal Prosecutor's Office took action against a suspected right-wing terrorist group in several federal states early Wednesday morning. Five suspects have been arrested by the highest law enforcement authority. They are between 14 and 18 years old.
A first young person is already in custody. The investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice opened an arrest warrant for the 14-year-old and executed it, according to a spokeswoman for the Federal Prosecutor's Office. The four co-accused were also to be brought before the court in Karlsruhe later that day.
The young people were members - in one case supporters - of a right-wing extremist terrorist group called the "Last Wave of Defense", according to the accusation of the Federal Prosecutor's Office. With arson attacks on asylum seekers' homes and left-wing institutions, the group wanted to bring the democratic system of the Federal Republic to collapse. It sees itself as the last instance in the defense of the "German nation," according to a statement from the Karlsruhe authority.
According to the information, more than 220 police officers from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the Federal Police as well as police forces from Brandenburg, Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Thuringia and Central Hesse were involved in the arrests and searches.
The Federal Prosecutor's Office attributes three brutal attacks and attack plans to the group. Some of them are said to have been planned or committed by those recently arrested, and some by three other suspects who are already in custody. It is about an arson attack on a cultural center in Altdöbern in the south of Brandenburg, an attempted but unsuccessful attack on an asylum seekers' home in Schmölln in Thuringia and attack plans for an asylum shelter in Senftenberg, Brandenburg.
The attack in Senftenberg was probably prevented thanks to information from a team of reporters from "stern"/RTL. In February, according to the Dresden Public Prosecutor's Office, investigators in Saxony searched an apartment and another property and found explosives in the form of two bullet bombs, brass knuckles, one-handed knives, ammunition, alarm and airsoft guns. A 21-year-old German was arrested. The research of the team of reporters also helped to clarify the attack on the Kulturhaus in Altdöbern.
